What is a DNS Server?

A Domain Name System (DNS) server helps you find the correct website on the internet. It consists of a series of numbers, such as 142.270.130.48.

But it is very difficult for individuals to remember each number, so we use names such as facebook.com, google.com, and snapchat.com.

For example, we type www.google.com into the browser. Your computer asks, “What is the IP address of google.com”. The DNS server looks it up and gives the correct IP address.

Your browser connects to Google’s server using the IP address. After this, Google’s server sends the webpage to your browser, and the webpage opens.

To explain it more simply, imagine a friend named “Henry” whose phone number is saved in your mobile phone.

Take Henry as the website (i.e., google.com), his phone number as the IP address, your contact list on your phone as the DNS server and calling a friend as connecting to the server.

If you somehow forget his number, just put his name in the search bar, click on his name, and call him. DNS servers work exactly like this.

As you now know about DNS servers, let’s talk about how to check the DNS server on different devices.
